June 20, 2019

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of spending a few days in Miami with many of the country’s top theater-makers at the 2019 Theatre Communications Group annual conference. I never cease to be amazed by the work ethic, creativity, and forward-thinking nature of the many individuals who make up the performing arts community, and this convening did not disappoint. Conversations ranged from community-driven audience engagement to finding the creative gifts stemming from traumatic events to brainstorming ways to better support and amplify the voices of those who have historically been marginalized.

I especially enjoyed getting to know so many new faces at the conference. I learned that 40% of this year’s attendees were first timers at TCG, making way for enriching conversations and bringing new perspectives to the table. To those, I say welcome to the fold!

To quote our closing plenary speaker, playwright Quiara Hudes: “Can I create abundance from basic ingredients?” Of course not; abundance is achieved by including a plethora of viewpoints and backgrounds. We have much work to do to continue on the path toward a more equitable and representative industry. But after witnessing their passionate dedication to the future of the field, I have full faith that the next generation of leaders is ready for the challenge.

What were your biggest takeaways from this year’s conference? Drop me a line, I’d love to chat!
